Buffalo Wind Storm '08

Sixty-to-seventy mile per hour winds are rocking Western New York. Channel 4 News put two reporters on different sides of a news van to discuss each piece of wood that flew by. Our own staff reporter, David Q. Hill, did some guerrilla journalism of his own.

80 Minutes for 27 January 2008

Ain't.

Your second grade teacher said it wasn't a real word and threatened to make you stand in the corner for using it. Recently I started listening to everything in my MP3 player and found ain't inspired some decent songs as well. A few of these tracks are covers, or in Bob Dylan's case a complete revision of his own original. Most are several decades old. You can download them all at once or individually.

G Love & Secret Service

My buddy Dave wanted to see G Love & Special Sauce perform at the Town Ballroom. The band played an excellent 2+ hour show. Meanwhile, some jackass threw up on the floor to our right and passersby slipped all over the place. To our left, drunks spilled enough beer on the steps that several people fell down them. Management was too inept to clean the floors, but they took care to confiscate my camera and return it without the batteries. Just think if security took their jobs seriously and busted the 50 folks taking videos on their cell phones. They patted me down at the entrance while I held the camera in my hand, so what's the big deal?

Here's what Dave snapped on my camera before security ruined his birthday.

All The Small Things/Change Clothes

Last year I thought up a ton of New Year's resolutions. There's a year's worth of blog entries to that effect which I don't wish to reiterate. This year, however, I had only two goals:

1) Quit my job, and
2) Say goodbye to my favorite shirt

As of Friday afternoon at 12:20 pm EST, mission accomplished.

My previous job required me to get up at 3 in the morning. On Friday I tore down the curtains in my bedroom. From now on I'm sleeping when it's dark out!

I also took advantage of the last day of my company discount to buy a new set of towels. You laugh, but I've used the same towels for ten years now. My towels are older than Eminem's career. Think about it, won't you?

Even better, I got to throw out the work khakis I've worn every weekday for the past two years! You know, the ones that I bought at a rival department store because they had better prices?

When I was fourteen the world obsessed over grunge, flannel, and an amazingly successful football team called the Buffalo Bills. Also that year, I went to an Ames store in Alden to pick out a heavy-duty plaid, lime-green flannel shirt in XL that over time became the Best Shirt Ever. Sure, it was formal wear, but I could also use it for school or play or volunteer house construction in West Virginia. In recent years it became too worn for outdoor use. I only let it out to see grunge pioneers The Melvins before forcing it into the purgatorial category of "pajamas."

But amidst all this fun, I knew I still delayed the inevitable. The shirt had to go. I threw it out with the work pants. I don't miss the job, but the shirt? Man. Give me a minute. . . .

Is This Yours?

Someone sent me this phone message last week. It's hilarious, but who did it? Fess up. I owe you one.

Box O'Rox

After seeing this last night I just had to post it.

4 Guys 1 Cup

I waited in the winter Buffalo wind for half an hour to get Stanley Cup tickets at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. The older couple behind me were related to the Bulldog and wished the Cup came in May so they wouldn't freeze outside. It was here in April, but those are brass tacks now. We picked a great night to come out. So did this kid! He put his grimy little hands all over that trophy.

Joe congratulates Dave on another successful season

Jerseys, photos, and other articles were also on display from Toronto.

The ticket line stretch from out here to the gift shop inside

The Dominik Hasek Award for Domination

Joe schmoozed with Miragh Addis, the Hockey Hall of Fame archivist/collections manager/bullet taker for the Cup. This is the traveling Cup, not the permanent Hall of Fame display.

Ding! Fries are done.

80 Minutes for 7 January 2008

I'm slowly transferring all my CDs to .mp3s. Last week I uploaded my CMJ CD compilations. Finally, they're searchable! CMJ breaks a lot of losers but some big names start on them, and I've found that the CDs seem even better after a few years when the public's become familiar with the artists. Here are a few decent tracks. You can download a .zip file or individual tracks. If the files die, post a message to let me know.

01 Klint - Diamond Featured in the film Snatch.

02 Soul Coughing - $300 Great band.

03 Malajube - Montreal -40C If Montreal at -40 is the same as Ottawa at -40, I can totally relate to this song.

04 Stephen Malkmus - The Hook

05 Ani DiFranco - Manhole It's a law that every Ani DiFranco release must be represented on a CMJ disc. She's on like 8 of these things.

06 Moe - Stranger Than Fiction Starring Will Ferrell?

07 Electric Six - Dance Epidemic RIYL an Americanized Gogol Bordello. No Jack White this time, sorry.

08 Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby I can remember the video:

09 Kasabian - Clubfoot Another band I got into because of their video:

10 Roots - Don't Feel Right More videos!

11 Mooney Suzuki - Alive And Amplified Oh man, it doesn't stop!

12 U.N.K.L.E. - Rabbit In Your Headlights DUDE. Speaking of videos . . . you have to see this one. Banned in several counties and featuring Thom Yorke on vocals!

13 Kittie - Until The End I only really added this band because my sister's met them a few times.

14 Buffalo Tom - Rachael Another band my sister is into.

15 Mario C. - Malkovich Masterpiece Remix Every once in a while the lyrics to song get stuck in my head.

16 Isley Brothers - Fight The Power (Parts 1 & 2) Very cool.

17 Hangar 18 - Where We At Not a clue.

18 Radiohead - Optimistic (Live In Dublin) Like all music magazines, Radiohead can do no wrong in CMJ. This track was a CMJ exclusive Kid A promo.

19 Eleni Mandell - Pauline Reminds me of something or other.

20 Cibo Matto - Know Your Chicken (12" Version) THIS is the one you HAVE to download. My favorite, rare version of one of the best songs by one of my favorite bands. If you only download one of these tracks, this is the one.

21 D.O.A. - Marijuana Mother****er It's censored on the CDDB info, too.

22 Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea (Radio Edit) Again, one of the best songs by one of my favorite bands. The 19-minute album version is preferable, of course.

Ice Bowl

The Bad Plus - Tom Sawyer (Rush cover)

When buddy Dave got tickets to the NHL Winter Classic, I was enthused! When he couldn't score me one, not so much. I gave Dave my camera and told him to make me proud. Dave is a former sports photographer and I must admit that his pictures are excellent. The twenty minutes of video are shaky but still interesting. Here's footage of the Sam Roberts Band during intermission.

1.1.08.2

Ever get distracted during important events? For example, hearing an old man snore during a wedding? What about a woman's hair smacking you in the face during a New Year's Eve Party? Watch the video below and you'll see how the fireworks and ball drop took a backseat to this lady jumping up and down. If you happen to be her, don't worry! I had a great time. Find pictures after the clip.

Buffalo, New Year

I think I pissed off Keith Radford tonight.

Next post: a woman jumping up and down. Also, explosions.
