Tonight I had a lovely time with buds Dave and Joe. We watched Hotel Rwanda, used a third-story bathroom from the 1950s, then went to a bar and stood around! Actually, I get sarcastic for no reason sometimes. It really was a good movie and it was Dave's new car is the Dizzy Hizzy. Coming back to sarcasm . . . the night got even more exciting when I came home! My odometer was at 66,664 so I grabbed my camera and started driving around the block.

66,665 (on a bumpy side road)

Woohoo! My car is officially Evil. For reference, Dave's new car has 100 miles on it.

Here's a picture of my dog!

Google News

Google News

Google News has gotten Googlier! (As if that were even possible!) It now allows you to customize the page. I now get five headlines instead of three and sections on Canada and Buffalo (mostly sports). Rock on, Google.

WuTang Financial

Denny's @ Case

Today I went to the library and picked up some old government documents from the main stacks. When I checked them out they couldn't do it because the last time someone had touched them, computers didn't exist. They weren't in the system. Now I have to wait a day for the library techs to do coding and data entry. So woohoo, I discovered something!

Godwin's Law FAQ

How to post about Nazis and get away with it

I had a question about my bill, so I sent Verizon this E-mail:

"I changed plans in the past month. According to my current bill, that month should have cost $38.38 (minus taxes and surcharges) but is billed for $43.37 (minus taxes and surcharges). Why is this? My prior monthly plan was $35/mo. and my current plan is $40/mo., which makes the $43.37 seem very odd."

They had the nerve to reply with this:

"Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. We regret to hear there may be a discrepancy with your account, and we are happy to assist you. Please contact us via e-mail with the specifics (charge amount, billing period, etc.) of your issue. Verizon Wireless takes all comments from our customers very seriously and we would like to assist with your questions or concerns as quickly as possible. We appreciate your business. Thank you for using Verizon Wireless products and services."

My head hurts now.

MST3K DVDs

Heavy.com

In class tonight someone brought up how Spic 'N' Span cleaner is an old racist term referring to housework done by Latin American immigrants. I'd never thought about it, and it blew my mind. "I get the 'spic' part, but what does 'span' mean?" I asked stupidly. "SPANISH", she replied. "D'oh!" I remarked back. Why had I never thought of that before?

Then I looked it up on the trusty Internets:

http://www.word-detective.com/030201.html

Q: Dear Word Detective: Here's a phrase I've always wondered about: "spic 'n span." In fact, the more I think about it, the stranger it seems. Where did this phrase come from? -- James Harrigan, Miami, FL

A: Well, since the average American is said to watch somewhere between 70 and 7,000 hours of television each and every week, I think it's fair to say that most of us know "Spic 'n Span" as the name of a popular household cleaning product. Thinking about television's effect on our language, I had the unsettling thought that future generations of couch potatoes might well assume that the phrase "spick and span" was just another case of a trademarked product name being adopted into English as a generic noun, much the way "scotch tape" and "baggie" have been.

That would be a shame, because "spick and span" actually has a rather interesting history. The phrase was originally "spick and span new," and while we usually use "spick (or "spic") and span" to mean "spotlessly clean" (as they say in the commercials), the original meaning was "brand new." "Spick and span" dates back to the 16th century and was originally used to describe a brand new ship. The "spick" was a spike or nail, and the "span" came from an Old Norse word, "spannyr," meaning "fresh wood chip." A ship that was "spick and span new" was therefore "new in every nail and piece of wood."

Although both "spick" and "span" had existed in English for hundreds of years, the combination of "spick and span" seems to have been adopted from the Dutch version of "spick and span," "spiksplinternieuw." It's a shame the phrase was translated into English, actually. Wouldn't you like to hear a TV announcer try to sell you "spiksplinternieuw"?

The brandname Scotch came about while Richard Drew was testing his first masking tape to determine how much adhesive he needed to add. The bodyshop painter became frustrated with the sample masking tape and exclaimed, "Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!" The name was soon applied to the entire line of 3M tapes.

Canisius College got trounced at the MAAC Tournament tonight, like 79-59. The highlight was a 3-on-3 contest between team mascots. Here they are talking before the exhibition.

Cheerleaders, whatever.

Most of the mascots are just out there to have fun, but the Niagara Purple Eagle is pumped up. Here he is talking trash to the Canisius C-Block while the other mascots just screw around holding hands.

The official MAAC Tournament Human Mop

The Purple Eagle sets a pick.

More showboating by Purple Eagle. He was the high scorer that night. P.E. is the Kobe Bryant of the MAAC Mascot League.

C-Block. In the pink, to the far right, is the infamous Megan O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Backstage

All in all, the game blew.

Check 1 2

Tonight I went to an MC Chris show at ritzy Broadway Joe's. There were nerds a-plenty so I fit in just fine. Anyway, I was listening to the opening act, thinking "I could do that", when it occurred to me: I HAD done that. For some reason I just never posted it to this blog because . . . now I remember, I was extremely embarrassed! Tonight, after hearing a kid rap two songs about how cool it was to live in Pennsylvania, I'm not so ashamed anymore.

--Check 1 2 (listen to song #3)--
by TomServo0 of Cucumber + Ginseng

check, check 1 check 2
checkin' this check
chick check, where my chickens at

yo, this check's gotta BOUNCE

we just checkin'
microphone checkin'
see if the soundman's learned his lesson
music is testin'
persistence a blessin'
when it comes together, sweet coalescence

found a microphone thrown in a drawer
after searchin' through some gear near my closet door
I got closer, with a Radio Shack cord
and a bootleg audio editor
not the greatest job, but the job is done
input Casio SK-1

so yo, here's to y'all
schrock and awe
northern drawl
feedback fuzz
easy does
day breaks
more mistakes

double back
keep it goin'
though the track
isn't flowin'
double that
find the rhythm
in this hieroglyphic system

now the breakdown is right before us
check out my ominous Arabian chorus

[hunger hurts in the desert
our dromedary camels outpace us
gonna get me an ice cream
dessert at the next oasis

and the buzzards fly overhead
if I don't get there soon I'm gonna be dead]

pass the mic to my lonesome
what's on my Tombstone?
pepperoni, cheese, and some anchovies
"Here lies Fred, his wife of many years,
and all the sucka emcees he brought to tears.
Had no experience, had no skills,
Wrote rhymes down, stood up and killed."

"One night, bored, and just for fun
he produced his first record, went to Number One
throughout the nation, a pop sensation
the inspiration for a generation
like Slick Rick but a whole lot slicker
like the Beatles but a whole lot bigger
records he was wreckin' like acne to your complexion
at his mention all attention turned around to his direction."

phew, wait, lemme take a breath,
that's a lot of mumbling, we finished yet?

The other day I got my free Trojan condom in the mail! Too bad I don't know what to do with it. I mean, I KNOW what to do with it, but I'm not that kind of person. I mean, I AM that kind of person, but I'm not going to have the chance to . . . I mean, I PROBABLY . . .

Forget it.
